An Introduction to Solution Focused Brief Therapy

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a short-term goal-focused therapeutic approach which helps clients change by constructing solutions rather than dwelling on problems. Elements of the desired solution often are already present in the client's life, and become the basis for ongoing change.

The therapist intervenes only to the extent necessary, with treatment usually lasting for less than six sessions. SFBT was developed by Steve de Shazer, Insoo Kim Berg, and the team at the Brief Family Therapy Center of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the mid-1980's.

The Solution Focused Brief Therapy training workshop is designed and delivered by SFBT expert Dr. Seán Foy, Director and Head of Mental Health and Addiction training at The Learning Curve Institute. People like what we do

“I enjoyed the model itself, the practical elements of case studies and role plays, and the style of facilitation was engaging. The pacing was good for digesting the theory and I left feeling like I had a deeper understanding of the model than I would have done if the course had been shorter. Thoroughly enjoyed the training and have been implementing it in my client and group work since."

Jessica Hurrell, Mental Health Recovery Support Worker, SHINE, December 2022

"The trainer was faultless. He made is easy to ask questions and speak in front of the group. His humour added to the heavier pieces of the course. I loved the interactive exercises. The content was engaging. The course length was perfect. It worked well in a remote environment.”

Angelina Lavelle, Student Advisor, Maynooth University Access Programme, January 2022

“I liked both theory and practice, but Sean’s presentation skills with humour and simplicity really ‘grounded’ the SFBT concept for me as it cemented some of the skills I am already using, while providing extra tools for my arsenal.”

Deirdre Blewitt, Clinical Support Worker, Mindspace Mayo, May 2021
