Meet our lecturers

The Learning Curve Institute boasts a team of some of the best lecturers and trainers in Ireland, + read about them here

Developed by Miller and Rollnick, Motivational Interviewing is a client-centred approach that elicits behavioural changes by assisting individuals to explore and resolve ambivalence. This approach is especially helpful with individuals who are less motivated. Research has shown Motivational Interviewing to be helpful with a wide range of client groups and issues.

This four day Advanced course will consolidate the information gained over previous introductory workshops and will include Intermediate Level Motivational Interviewing training. It will allow for integration of theory into practice and offer the opportunity for participants to bring experiences from their work into the workshop. The Learning Curve Institute offers participants the opportunity to bring along transcripts etc (suitably made anonymous) for discussion over the course of the workshop. This service is offered as it is a “real” examination of the implementation of theory into practice and will ultimately deepen the understanding and practice of the participant.

The workshop emphasises and applies the theory and practice of Motivational Interviewing as an evidence based treatment approach.

Throughout the workshop various methods will be used to facilitate learning, including lecture format, demonstration of techniques, videos presentations, diad and triad exercises and feedback. There will be a greater emphasis on the the practice than in more preliminary trainings.

Programme Aims

The aim of this four day workshop is to build on and expand the theory introduced in the previous introduction level workshops on Motivational Interviewing. The objective of this four day workshop is to provide space to practice the skills associated with motivational interviewing at a deeper level. Programme Content

Students will receive handouts and relevant literature to enable them to develop their understanding of Motivational interviewing appropriate to this level. In each session students will have the opportunity to observe and practice Motivational Interviewing through role-plays and scenarios provided by the lecturer. In this programme there will also be opportunity for individual participants to provide transcripts etc (suitably anonymous) of their actual use of Motivational Interviewing with clients and this can then be used to deepen their understanding and practice of Motivational Interviewing.

Training will consider analysis of practice audio or videotapes. Demonstration and practice exercises and will have less didactic material than the Introduction to Motivational Interviewing level.
