Spanish for Intermediates

This programme is aimed at people who have studied Spanish before and who are able to hold a basic conversation. They have a basic understanding of some of the key grammar terms and wish to improve their fluency and writing skills. It is a perfect follow on course from the FETAC Level 3 or 4 Beginners Course with The Learning Curve Institute and is meant as a preparation course for the FETAC Level 5 Intermediate Course. There are no exams on this course. There is a specific emphasis on learning to speak and write in everyday language and students will learn how to form sentences, write and converse using more complex phrases and grammar tenses. Students will be encouraged and helped to speak Spanish as much as possible in the classroom to increase fluency and confidence.
Programme Duration
2 hours per week for 8 weeks. 16 hours total.
Dates and Locations for Spring 2012:
- 17/04/12 - 05/06/12: (Tuesdays) 8:00pm - 10:00pm. Mayo education Centre, Castlebar
- 18/04/12 - 06/06/12: (Wednesdays) 8:00pm - 10:00pm. Ballinode Community College, Sligo.
In order to maximize learning groups will be limited to a maximum of 12 students per class.
Programme certification
Certificate in “Spanish Language for Intermediates” from The Learning Curve Institute.
Programme Aims
To give students a more in-depth understanding of the Spanish language and its everyday uses. To equip students will the tools to form more complex sentences using a variety of different grammar terms. To enable students to listen to and understand modern Spanish language and to have the ability to write letters, CVs, emails and cards in the past, present, conditional and future tense.
Programme Content
Students will receive handouts, worksheets and notes to enable them to speak, listen, read and write in Spanish using the past, present, conditional and future tenses. In each 2 hour session 50% of the class time will be allocated to speaking and the other 50% will be allocated to grammar, texts and listening. Students will also carry out scenarios and role plays of situations where they would need to have a good level of spoken Spanish (for example in the bank, applying for a job, booking a holiday).
Learning Outcomes
- To equip students with the tools to form more complex sentences using a variety of grammar terms.
- To build on and expand existing knowledge within the group.
- To enhance confidence in students spoken Spanish.
- To equip students with the ability to speak in a manner that is used in everyday language in Spain and is understood by Spanish speakers.
- To provide students with the tools to form letters, CVs, emails and other written documents in Spanish.
Entry Requirements
Basic level of Spanish language and grammar terms or The Certificate in Spanish Language Level 1 from The Learning Curve Institute.
Assessment
Assessment will be carried out through continuous assessment of written pieces, role plays, comprehensions and listening exercises.
Other Information
The Learning Curve Institute offers a unique post course support system whereby students are provided with the contact details of the lecturer and are free to contact him/her with any questions they may have or even documents (CVs, Cover Letters, Forms) that they would like the lecturer to help them with.
Materials
Students will each be supplied with a hardback notebook, folder and pen for the duration of the course. Students are encouraged to bring a Spanish-English dictionary to every class. No other books are needed as all materials will be supplied by The Learning Curve Institute.
