Developed by Miller and Rollnick. Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered approach that elicits behavioral changes by assisting individuals to explore and resolve ambivalence. This approach is especially helpful with individuals who are less motivated. Research has shown Motivational Interviewing to be helpful with a wide range of client groups and issues. This two day course will equip the attendees with a sound understanding of Motivational Interviewing theory and skills.
Programme Duration
The next 2 day workshop on Motivational Interviewing will take place in Dublin in March 2012. The workshop is also planned to run in Cork/Kerry region during the summer in 2012.
- March 22nd and 23rd 2012: All Hallows College, Dublin.

This workshop is also planned for Galway in November 2012.

Programme Aims
The objective of this two day workshop is to provide the theory of motivational interviewing and the space to practice the skills associated with Motivational Interviewing.
Learning Outcomes
- To equip students with the tools to be enable them to develop and build on their own counseling skills.
- To build on and expand existing knowledge in relation to Motivational Interviewing within the group.
- To enhance confidence in participants use of Motivational Interviewing Skills.
- To become familiar with the general Principles of Motivational Interviewing
- Express empathy
- Develop Discrepancy
- Roll with resistance
- Support self-efficacy
- Avoid Arguments.
5. To provide space and time for participants to become familiar with Motivational Interviewing and use the following core skills:
- Listening
- Use of Open-ended questions
- Affirming
- Reflective Listening
- Summarising
- Eliciting “change talk”

Assessment
Assessment will be carried out through continuous assessment of role plays and exercises.
Other Information
The Learning Curve Institute offers a unique post course support system whereby students are provided with the contact details of the lecturer and are free to contact him/her with any questions they may have.
Materials
Students will each be supplied with a folder and pen for the duration of the course. No other books are needed as all materials will be supplied by The Learning Curve Institute.
Venue
The 2 workshop "An Introduction to Motivational Interviewing" will be delivered on the following dates in Dublin:

The workshop takes place from 9:30am to 4:30pm over 2 full days. The workshop is also planned for Cork/Kerry region in Summer 2012.
