Programme Duration

2 hours per week for 8 weeks. 16 hours total.

Dates and Locations for September 2010:

  • 28/09/10 - 16/11/10: (Tuesdays) 8:00pm - 10:00pm. Westport, Co. Mayo.
  • 29/09/10 - 17/11/10: (Wednesdays) 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Sligo Town, Co. Sligo.
  • 30/09/10 - 18/11/10: (Thursdays) 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Galway City, Co. Galway.

In order to maximize learning groups will be limited to a maximum of 12 students per class.

About the programme

This programme is aimed at people who have either never studied French before or those who have a basic level and wish to refresh their memory and improve their fluency. There is a specific emphasis on learning to speak and write in everyday language rather than learning old fashioned phrases from books. Students will also be encouraged and helped to speak French as much as possible in the classroom to increase fluency and confidence.

Programme Aims

To give students a comprehensive level of basic French so that they can hold a conversation, be able to listen to and understand modern French language and to have the ability to write letters, emails and cards in the past present and future tense.

Programme Content

Students will receive handouts, worksheets and notes to enable them to speak, listen, read and write in French using the past, present and future tense. In each 2 hour session 50% of the class time will be allocated to speaking and the other 50% will be allocated to grammar, texts and listening. Students will also carry out scenarios and role plays of situations where they would need to speak French (for example in the restaurant, at the train station, booking a hotel).

Learning Outcomes

  1. To equip students with a sound introduction to the French language and grammar points.
  2. To build on and expand existing knowledge within the group.
  3. To enhance confidence in students spoken French.
  4. To equip students with the ability to speak in a manner that is used in France and is understood by French speakers.
  5. To provide students with the tools to form letters, emails and other written documents in French.

Assessment

Assessment will be carried out through continuous assessment of written pieces, role plays, comprehensions and listening exercises.

Other Information

The Learning Curve Institute offers a unique post course support system whereby students are provided with the contact details of the lecturer and are free to contact him/her with any questions they may have or even documents (CVs, Cover Letters, Forms) that they would like the lecturer to help them with.

Materials

Students will each be supplied with a hardback notebook, folder and pen for the duration of the course. Students are encouraged to bring a French-English dictionary to every class. No other books are needed as all materials will be supplied by The Learning Curve Institute.
