FETAC Level 5 Substance Use - Issues in Youth Work
Learners who successfully complete this module will: The programme is aimed at participants who wish to expand their knowledge of drugs and their use/misuse.
Programme Duration
The FETAC Level 5 Component Certificate in Substance Use - Issues in Youthwork takes place for 3 hours per week over a 10 week period. 30 Hours Total. It can also be offered over 4 full days inhouse to groups.

Programme Aims
The aim of this programme is to enable participants to be aware of the various drugs, both legal and illegal that are available. The aim of the programme is to raise awareness of the issues that exist for youth workers in relation to substances use. The course will cover the following four areas.
- Substances and Dependency
- Young People and Substance Use
- Responses, Interventions and Strategies
- Youth Work Responses
Programme Content
Students will receive handouts and relevant literature to enable them to develop their understanding of substance use in relation to youthwork appropriate to this level. In each session students will have the opportunity to observe and discuss the various categories of drugs and the effects that addiction may have on the family, concerns for youthwork and practical responses and interventions.
Learning Outcomes
To build on and expand existing knowledge in relation to substance use and misuse within the group. To enhance confidence in participants in relation to their understanding of Youthwork and the process of substance misuse. The content will focus on young people and their drug use and the youth work responses to deal with this issue.
Entry Requirements
Level 4 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.
Assessment
- Project - 50%
- Two Assignments - 50% (25% each)

Materials
Students will receive handouts and recommended reading lists from the lecturers.
Venue
This course can be offered all over Ireland in-house to community groups, organizations or members of staff.
