FETAC Level 5 Drug and Alcohol Addiction
The FETAC Level 5 Component Certificate in Drug and Alcohol Addiction is designed to equip staff in drugs and/or homeless services and those engaged in community development with the competencies and knowledge necessary to meet the various needs of substance users and to assist them in making choices regarding treatment options. This multi-disciplinary module operates under Adult Education Principles focusing on experiential learning. Essentially this FETAC Drug and Alcohol Addiction Course covers 5 main areas:
Programme Duration
This Drug and Alcohol Addiction course at FETAC level 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications takes place over 10 weeks with 3 hours of lectures per week. 30 hours total classroom time. A further 2-3 hours of self directed learning is recommended for successful completion of the course.

- Limerick 25 April to 27 June 2012: Wednesday Nights; 6:00-9:00pm; Limerick Education Centre.
- Galway 24 April to 26 June 2012: Tuesday Nights; 6:00-9:00pm; Westside Resource Centre.
Programme certification
Upon successful completion of this module participants will receive a FETAC Level 5 Drug and Alcohol Addiction Component Certificate. It is also known as a "Minor Award" at Level 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications.
This module is also one of the components of the FETAC Level 5 Major Award in Community Development. Through the new FETAC Common Awards System this component certificate can be combined with other Level 5 Component Certificates or Minor Awards to achieve the Major Award in Community Development. These other modules can be completed with other providers and at a time that is convenient to you.

Programme Aims
Learners who successfully complete this FETAC Drug and Alcohol Addiction Level 5 Component Certificate course will:
- Have gained a deep understanding of the nature of substance use and addiction/dependency
- Be informed of the health (physical and mental) issues, that impact on substance users and staff
- Have explored their beliefs and attitudes to substance use and related issues
- Examined the range of treatment approaches and interventions available to substance users and methods of referral
Programme Content
Students will receive handouts and relevant literature to enable them to develop their understanding of drug and alcohol addiction appropriate to this level. In each session students will have the opportunity to observe and discuss the various categories of drugs and the effects that addiction may have on the family and community. Role-plays and scenarios will be used to enhance the groups understanding of drug and alcohol addiction issues and to discover the various treatment options that are available.
Learning Outcomes
- To build on and expand existing knowledge in relation to substance use and related drug and alcohol addiction issues within the group.
- To enhance confidence in participants in relation to their understanding of drug and alcohol addiction and the process of addiction.
- To examine the range of treatment approaches and interventions available to substance users and methods of referral.
- To allow space and time for participants to look at Addiction at a community and social level and examine the drug using trends that exist in Ireland and internationally.
- To have gained a deep understanding of the nature of substance use and addiction/dependency
- To become informed of the health (physical and mental) issues, that impact on substance users and staff
Entry Requirements
While there are no special or specific entry requirements for this course, The Learning Curve Institute and FETAC have the following preferred entry requirements for this Level 5 Drug and Alcohol Addiction Course:
Level 4 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.
Assessment
All assessment is carried out in accordance with FETAC All assessment is carried out in accordance with FETAC regulations. Assessment is devised by the course director, with external moderation by FETAC. Assessment for this FETAC Level 5 Drug and Alcohol Addiction course takes place in the following format:
- Learner Record - 30%
- Skills Demonstration - 25%
- Project - 45%
Learner Record: A personal learner record will be compiled by candidates. It will include reflection on: * information acquired * how this information may be integrated into working with individuals and /or groups * personal feelings and attitudes that arose during session and that may have changed * a critical overview of each session ie. positive and negative aspects of the session, information received an any additional relevant information.
Skills Demonstration: In one or more skills demonstrations, candidates will be assessed in following skills areas: * role-playing various intervention skills and techniques *presenting information to the group in an effective and engaging manner *observation of the participant in their interaction with service users
Project: The tutor will devise a project brief that requires candidates to demonstrate: *their understanding and application of concepts in relation to their chosen topic *the use of relevant research and sources of information eg referencing and bibliography *the ability to analyse, evaluate and draw conclusions with regard to their chosen topic

You do not need to buy any books for this course. All materials for the FETAC Level 5 Drug and Alcohol Addiction course will be available for download from The Learning Curve Institute website. We will also supply a list of recommended reading and websites that you could consult for further reading if you wish.

To book a place on this course please click on the Book Now tab of this website. The course can be booked online by paying the full course fee with a credit card or using paypal. Alternatively a €150 deposit can be sent to our Head Office in Mayo to secure your place on the course. A completed application form and minimum non refundable deposit of €150 is necessary for all bookings.

FETAC Certification Fee: FETAC charge a Certification fee of €20 per person per Minor Award for the issuing of all FETAC component certificates. All learners undertaking FETAC courses with The Learning Curve Institute will be liable for this €20 fee in addition to the relevant course fee.
- Social Welfare recipients and/or Medical Card holders are exempt from this fee.
