Programme Duration
This FETAC Addiction Studies course is a Component Certificate or module at FETAC Level 5 of 30 hours duration delivered part time over 10 weeks.
Locations and dates for Autumn 2011:
In Autumn 2011 The Learning Curve Institute will deliver The FETAC Level 5 Drug and Alcohol Addiction Course in Athlone, Cork, Dundalk, Sligo, Dublin, Limerick, Galway and Mayo in place of the Addiction Studies module due to increased demand for a course with a counselling skills component as part of the assessment. The FETAC Level 5 Addiction Studies Course will be delivered again starting around the country in May 2012.

Programme certification
FETAC Level 5 Component Certificate in Addiction Studies. This component certificate can be combined with other Level 5 Minor Awards or Components to achieve a Major Award. Full details can be found on www.fetac.ie
Programme Aims
The aim of the FETAC Addiction Studies course is to enable participants to be aware of the various drugs, both legal and illegal that are available at the present time in their area. It focuses on their impact on the community and on the whole process of addiction. Essentially the course will cover four main areas
- Drugs and their effects
- The Process of addiction
- Intervention Strategies
- Community Responses
Programme Content
Students will receive handouts and relevant literature to enable them to develop their understanding of addiction studies appropriate to this level. In each session students will have the opportunity to observe and discuss the various categories of drugs and the effects that addiction may have on the family and community.
Learning Outcomes
To build on and expand existing knowledge in relation to addiction studies within the group. To enhance confidence in participants in relation to their understanding of addiction studies and the process of Addiction. To allow space and time for participants to look at Addiction at a community and social level and examine the drug using trends that exist in Ireland and internationally.
Entry Requirements
Level 4 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.
Assessment
- Collection of Work - 60%
- Two Assignments - 40% (20% each)
