The FETAC Level 4 French programme is aimed at participants who wish to gain a basic understanding and communication skills in the French Language for work or personal purposes. Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • develop the ability to use the language effectively for practical communication
  • acquire the basic language skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for advancement to further study or into employment
  • gain an awareness of the culture and civilisation of countries where the target language is spoken.

Programme Duration

The FETAC Level 4 French Component Certificate Course takes place for 3 hours per week over 8 weeks in Galway, Sligo and Castlebar, Co. Mayo. 24 Hours total classroom time.

  • 03/10/11 - 28/11/11 - Ballinode Community College, Sligo - 6:00-9:00pm (Mondays)
  • February 2012 - Westside Education Resource Centre, Galway - 6:00-9:00pm (Wednesdays)
  • 13/10/11 - 01/12/11 - Mayo Education Centre, Castlebar - 6:00-9:00pm (Thursdays)

Programme certification

FETAC Level 4 Component Certificate in French Language.

Programme Aims

The aim of this programme is to give beginners or near-beginners a basic level of language competence in French. The module may be included in a wide range of vocational programmes. Language skills will be developed through broad vocationally related activities. The The emphasis is on building the learners’ confidence through integrating skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

As per FETAC guidelines, this course will cover the following four areas.

  • Interpersonal Communication
  • Travel and Accommodation
  • Food and Drink
  • Shopping and Making Purchases

Programme Content

Students will receive handouts, worksheets, texts and exercises to enable them to develop their French language skills appropriate to this level. Learners will develop their French Language skills in the following four core areas as per the FETAC course guidelines:

  • Interpersonal Communication
  • Travel and Accommodation
  • Food and Drink
  • Shopping and Making Purchases

Learning Outcomes

  1. To equip students with the tools to form basic sentences using a variety of grammar terms. 
  2. To build on and expand existing knowledge within the group. 
  3. To enhance confidence in students spoken French. 
  4. To develop the ability to use the language effectively for practical communication 
  5. To acquire the basic language skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for advancement to further study or into employment 6. To gain an awareness of the culture and civilisation of countries where the target language is spoken.

Entry Requirements

Level 3 Certificate, Junior Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.

Assessment

Assessment for this course takes place in continuous assessment as well as an examination on the last week.

  • Collection of Work - 40%
  • Examination (Aural) - 30%
  • Skills Demonstration - 30%

Grading System as per FETAC Guidelines

Pass 50 - 64%
Merit 65 - 79%
Distinction 80 - 100%

Other Information

All registered students of the course will be contacted before commencing the programme to ensure they are aware of the necessary requirements and to answer any questions they may have. The Learning Curve Institute offers a unique post course support system whereby students are provided with the contact details of the lecturer and are free to contact him/her with any questions they may have or even documents (CVs, Cover Letters, Forms) that they would like the lecturer to help them with after the course has finished.

Materials

Students will each be supplied with a hardback notebook, folder and pen for the duration of the course. Students are encouraged to bring a French-English dictionary to every class. No other books are needed as all materials will be supplied by The Learning Curve Institute.
