Drink Driver Education Course

Drink Driver Education Course
€199.00

In September 2010 Judges in Irish District Courts were given a new sentencing option where convicted drink drivers could be required to attend a Drink Driving Education Course as part of their sentence. This course is aimed specifically at convicted drink drivers and it will help drivers to separate alcohol use from driving. The course is not meant to help attendees to give up alcohol and it is not a counselling service.

The Learning Curve Institute offers a thorough 2 day drink driving education course for convicted drink drivers and research in the area has shown that education and awareness courses of this nature reduce repeat offending and therefore lead to a safer environment on our roads and less road deaths as a result of drink driving.

Programme Duration

The Drink Driver Education Course is delivered over two full days usually over a weekend.

Dates and Locations for 2012:

  • February 11 and 12; Westside Resource Centre, Galway; 9:30am-4:30pm
  • March 10 and 11; Aungier Street, Dublin; 9:30am-4:30pm

The programme will be offered again in July and August. Dates to be confirmed.

Programme certification

Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance entitled "Drink Driver Education Course" from The Learning Curve Institute.

Programme Aims

The aims of the 2 day drink driver education course are:

  • to enable participants to gain an understanding of the issues of drinking alcohol and driving. This information will assist the learners in making informed, positive future choices.
  • to explain the impact of new legislation
  • to outline the process involved in being arrested with a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, and the possible consequences of this happening.
  • to understand the effect alcohol has on the body and brain. This information includes up to date knowledge based on scientific evidence which will again assist the learners in making informed, positive future choices.
  • to demonstrate to attendees the effect drink driving can have on the families of victims
  • to give attendees details on how to apply for their license back and how to appeal for a reduction in sentence

Programme Content

Throughout the course learners will have the opportunity to explore the above learning outcomes through presentations, group work and scenarios. They will also be given a forum to discuss the various topics raised within the sessions and every student will receive a copy of the presentation given on the day. Through discussion the workshop will explore the common myths surrounding alcohol and its effects on driving and show that such myths are not fact based. All attendees will be given the Lecturers contact details, and, as part of the service provided by The Learning Curve Institute, encouraged to contact the Learning Curve should issues or questions concerning the workshop content arise in the future.

Learning Outcomes

  • To build on, and expand existing knowledge relating to the effects of alcohol, specifically the effects of drinking and driving.
  • To encourage positive future choices through delivering up to date health information and through facilitating group discussion regarding alcohol and driving.
  • To allow space and time for discussing the wider social impact drink driving has in Ireland.
