Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a short-term goal-focused therapeutic approach, which helps clients change by constructing solutions rather than dwelling on problems. Elements of the desired solution often are already present in the client’s life, and become the basis for ongoing change. The therapist intervenes only to the extent necessary, with treatment usually lasting for less than six sessions. SFBT was developed by Steve de Shazer, Insoo Kim Berg, and the team at the Brief Family Therapy Center of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the mid-1980's.

The aim of this two day workshop is to build on and expand the theory introduced in the introduction and intermediate workshops. The objective of the two day workshop is to provide space to practice the skills associated with Solution Focused Brief Therapy at an advanced level. This will include participants looking at their own practice with examples as a way of deepening their understanding of the Solution Focused Brief Therapy approach.

1. To build on and expand existing knowledge, in relation to Solution Focused Brief Therapy within the group.
2. To enhance confidence in participants use of Solution Focused Brief Therapy Skills, particularly with “difficult” clients.
3. To allow space and time for participants to look at their own practice in relation to their own case load with real examples (made suitably anonymous) in the context of using Solution Focused Brief Therapy.

Successful completion of both the 2 day Intermediate Workshop and the 2 day Introduction Workshop in Solution Focused Brief Therapy through The Learning Curve Institute.

Students must also be prepared to provide transcripts of real cases (made suitably anonymous) for discussion over the two days.

Assessment will be carried out through continuous assessment of role plays and listening exercises.
